From Middlesex to Malaysia: A Knight’s Templar Adventure
Who would have guessed that a casual conversation over dinner at the Grandmasters Bodyguard Preceptory would spark an unforgettable journey to Malaysia? That’s exactly what happened, and I couldn’t resist the opportunity. After discussing the Middlesex bodyguard with Russell Stewart—who was eager to launch a bodyguard preceptory in Southeast Asia—we exchanged numbers.
Soon after, Teams meetings with Russell and the enthusiastic Provincial Prior, Dr. Brian Shegar, led to an invitation to attend the Provincial Priory of Southeast Asia’s 34th Annual Chapter—perfectly timed with my usual holiday dates! My wife, Sophie, was on board, provided she could plan the rest of our vacation around the meetings.
We landed in Kuala Lumpur at sunrise, marvelling at the city’s skyline and the iconic Petronas Towers. Like true tourists, we hit the ground running, taking in breathtaking views from the KL Tower.
Russell soon welcomed us to Kuala Lumpur and invited me to a meeting at the Reed Masonic Centre. Sophie, ever the good sport, relaxed in the bar with a book while I attended the gathering. The centre was impressive, catering to Masons from Scottish, Irish, and English jurisdictions, complete with a gym and medical facilities. The hospitality was outstanding, and Sophie quickly became the centre of attention among the other guests.
The next day was packed with events: coffee, registration, the main chapter meeting, installations, lectures, a tour of the Masonic Centre, a Malta ritual demonstration, and a regional Knights Templar symposium. While the Knights were busy, the ladies enjoyed a tour of the textile museum and lunch at the Royal Selangor Club before joining us for dinner.
To my surprise, I was asked to give a speech at the festive board, following distinguished speakers from the Philippines and Hong Kong. It was the perfect moment to present Dr. Shegar with Middlesex 50th anniversary cufflinks and to gift Russell Stewart a Middlesex bodyguard badge and collarette—tokens that will surely be displayed with pride in Kuala Lumpur.
The evening ended with new friendships and cherished memories. The following day, we enjoyed a traditional Malaysian meal—eaten without cutlery—hosted by the Provincial Prior and other dignitaries. The warmth and hospitality we received were truly unforgettable.
And just as we thought our adventure was winding down, the date for the new bodyguard preceptory’s consecration was announced.
“So, Mrs. B, do you fancy going to Malaysia next April?” The adventure continues….
